I found this page today from Emporis.com Atlanta Tower, Atlanta, U.S.A. | Emporis.com Apparently, in the 80s, a huge supertall skyscraper was being considered for construction in Atlanta. If built, it would have been the tallest building in the world at the time, and the second tallest building in the world right now (after the Burj Khalifa). However, it was ultimately rejected because it would dwarf the rest of the skyline. I tried to google it, but nothing about it came up. Do any of y'all know anything about it? Thanks

I've never heard of that proposal. If it was scrapped in the 80's, I doubt it would resurface. I do think Atlanta should build a supertall tower, not an office building like the one in Dubai, but a freestanding structure like the CN Tower in Toronto or the almost complete Tokyo Sky Tree. It could be called the Turner Tower, and be used for TBS/TNT HD broadcasting.

Atlanta already has an amazing skyline.

The city really needs to focus on low and midrise buildings so that it fills out in multiple directions. That's what gives depth and richness to a city. Storefronts, restaurants, cafes, broad sidewalks and other pedestrian uses are far more important than towers if you want a city that pops and sizzles at the human level.

The perfect examples are Decatur and Virginia Highland. They are widely praised as the most urban parts of metro Atlanta yet they are mostly one and two story buildings with no highrises whatsoever.

Consider how much people enjoy having a few blocks of this kind of development, and imagine how cool it would be if that were spread over wide areas of the city.

Well said Arjay, I'm right there with you.

I spent the weekend in Asheville, and it's a perfect example of what you're preaching. There are a few highrises on the skyline, but most of the buildings are modestly sized. What makes their downtown great is the pedestrian vibrancy, the pleasure of walking, and the storefronts with interesting shops and restaurants, not the height of their towers. It's like if you took the best of Atlanta's intown 'hoods and mashed them into one contiguous, beautiful whole.

Atlanta needs more going on at ground level, not in the sky.

I wasn't here in the 80s, but I do remember the short-lived Trump Towers Atlanta in Midtown...foreclosed on last year.

We do?

I thought there was an existing inventory of unsold highrise condos and a glut of unoccupied high rise office space.

Clearly we should build more.

Good call champ.

I should have said "I want" instead of "we need"
