It has been years since I have seen many lightning bugs and this year I haven't seen a single one. It makes me very sad. I've done some brief research and there's a theory that light pollution is one of the things killing off the lightning bugs/fireflies. I had assumed it was just pesticides, but perhaps there is more to it.

I've been wondering if anyone still has lightning bugs in their area. I'm in North Decatur and my yard should be a natural haven for lightning bugs (and I never use pesticides) but they appear to be all gone.

There are probably many vanishing species that are more important, and I'm not much of a bug fan in general, but lightning bugs are so magical during the summer. It makes me really sad to think of kids growing up without ever having seen them lighting up the trees on summer evenings.

Here's a web site in case anyone else is interested in the subject: http://www.firefly.org/

Really! That's great! Now I'm really confused. My neighborhood seems ideal for lightning bugs. I wonder why they're all gone from here.

Maybe it's just intown. We'd certainly have the most light pollution and habitat destruction, but I wonder about pesticides? At least I'm glad to know they're still out there, even if they're not around my house.

Certainly I've seen them this summer in north-east Cobb, but I'd say they seemed fewer than previous years. I was thinking perhaps the drought has affected them.

That's funny. I was just thinking about this the other day. I used to remember summer evenings FILLED with fireflies...and I don't think I've seen one in years!

Same here. I've been asking people for years where's all the lightning bugs and butterflies, I don't really see them anymore. I always thought it was the cell phone and wi-fi signals killing them off. It's a shame, whatever it is.
