Hi,

I have heard that there is a route driving from NYC to ATL without paying tolls or paying very few. Does anyone know what the route is from Bronx, NY to ATL? Thanks

One way is to go west on 80 through NJ and into PA, then pick up 81 south. You can take that to 77 east through NC, and pick up 85 south. I'm not sure the extra gas costs in mileage will save you a lot of money, but it's a pleasant drive.

True about the bridge toll, but it's only $.50 or a dollar.

I remember when I was headed back to Atl from NYC I made the mistake of taking the New Jersey Turnpike through Philly and 95 down through Baltimore & Washington. I was so sick of paying tolls that I finally just had the GPS route me toll-free instead of the fastest route. It had me get off on an exit and head south on the road for a few miles then got me back on the highway on the far side of the toll plaza. Take that Maryland!

Anyway just google map or mapquest a toll free route. It might do weird things but you'll pay a lot less.

I'm also from the BX just moved to Atlanta, although still traveling back and forth. The Northeast are crazy with those tolls ! lol. The route the other poster mentioned i have driven before its cool route through the mountains but parts are very boring. So i advise you drive it during the day if your driving solo. Also if you don't mind being without your car or can arrange another option, there is a bus that goes from NYC to ATL for $100 i think. Perfect for when you have to travel somewhere last minute, cant get a flight or don't want to drive. Its a lil cramp sometimes but you gotta do what you gotta do when its crunch time. The website is gotobus.com

Thanks so much for the map, I've heard that this route is faster and also no tolls which is great.
Thanks also for the bus suggestion, I have taken that bus before and its cool for last minute travel but I will need transportation this time to bring some things down to Lithonia. There is also another bus for $100 that leaves from 127th St in Harlem, this one is black owned I believe.

Funny you ask this, I just made the drive from Harlem to Atlanta and back a couple of weeks ago.

You'll hit a small toll on the turnpike if you take the GWB. Take the Westside Highway down to the Holland Tunnel instead and I'm not sure if you still hit the toll, but I think it's cheaper if you do. I don't think there's a way around that.

These are basically the directions I took. My girlfriend and I left Atlanta at 9pm and got to our place in Harlem at 10:45am. I hit one toll somewhere in PA that was all of $1. I-81 is much more rural and relaxing; I've done the trip via 95 a few times and never again.
