Though I am impressed with what Nashville is doing and I think it could possibly do well there, I can't help to think that maybe Atlanta should be building this...

Nashville museum on African American music planned *| ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/travel/nashville-museum-on-african-1178799.html - broken link)

(and it seems that Nashville is going through the whole process wisely/expertly...Sigh.)

I think LA will come first, since they owned the 90's with rap/hiphop.

We're still a little fresh here.

Memphis or Detroit have more claim than either Atlanta, LA, or Nashville, I'd think.

I really don't think this place would fit better in Atlanta than Nashville. Nashville has more history as a music town. It may be dominated by country but it still has more clout in the business than Atlanta.

They're doing this because of the music end of the museum, not because of the African American/civil rights side of it which would be the case in Atlanta. Nashville has been for some time branding itself as a beacon for all things music across all genres and they have been aggressive about it. While this museum could have gone in either city, Nashville simply beat us to it.

When I left Nashville, I swear more people were moving there to try and make it in pop/rock than country. There were musician transplants there from as far away as Japan but for some reason most out of state folks that don't do research on the city still view it as only country. While country music does indeed call Nashville home, that is far and away not the only thing Nashville offers. It's a stigma that music city is continuing to aggressively shake and they have sunk hundreds of millions of dollars developing its new identity while preserving and fostering the country music industry that put it on the map.

I just got a little homesick reading that article. I love Atlanta but I am quite proud to call Nashville the city I was born and raised in.

This pretty much sums up my view on the whole thing.

Interesting I would've thought it would've been Memphis, but I don't suppose it really matters since almost all American popular music is African American in origin.

Memphis would be good as well.

And right on with the bolded-part above.

I'm concerned that we're getting spread a little thin on museums. I'd much rather have a handful of truly distinguished museums.

I don't usually think of Nashville as a center for African-American American music, but even just that little story informed me of several cool connections/contributions Nashville has made.

Like others said, I think this would have done well in Atlanta also (perhaps on the streetcare line somewhere between the soon to be opening Civil and Human Rights Center and the MLK site), but Nashville acted on the idea sooner. I do think something like this is a good idea for Nashville b/c it builds on their existing brand (music) while expanding the usual thought of that brand as country music oriented. Hope they do a good job with it and that it is successful.
