I am wondering which of these high schools are public or private? or need to take an exam for entrance.

1. Columbus High School - Columbus, GA
2. Davidson Magnet HS - Augusta, GA
3. Johnson Magnet HS - Augusta, GA
4. Savannah Arts Academy - Savannah, GA
5. Allatoona HS - Acworth, GA
6. Pope HS - Marietta, GA

I'm not sure about Columbus off hand but the ones from the Atlanta area, Allatoona and Pope are public.
The magnet schools (including the Savannah Arts Academy) are public. I don't know a great deal about them in particular, but the magnet schools are specialized public schools that have unique curriculums and often to benefit better students and are used to make living in a weak urban school district better, since a kid that does well in school can transfer to the magnet school.

Let me ask this then.. if all 6 high schools are public, which do you have to take an entrance exam for admission to the high school.

Can you anyone who lives in the school district enter these 6 high schools?

The Magnet/Arts have entrance requirements. You can go to each school website to find the requirements.

The other school on your list are general public high school, To go to them from within the district, but outside the send area for the school, you would need to apply for a out of sending area request to the school/district, they may or may not approve it, depending on the reason you want to go there.

If these are the top 6 Magnet schools according the school rankings in Georgia, how come so few get admitted to Georgia Tech? There were only 11 students from Pope HS admitted to Tech last year? Unless Harvard, Stanford, Ivy, etc is the main feeder for these 6 High schools.

Pope (also Lassiter and Walton) are very high scoring East Cobb high schools that are geographically not too far from Wheeler High School, which has a science and engineering magnet program. I think the Wheeler magnet tends to siphon off at least some Walton/Pope/Lassiter zone students who have a strong interest in science and engineering.

Pope and (I believe) Allatoona are not magnet schools. They are regular schools. It is possible they might have a boosted program, like music or fine arts, that allows some people to transfer in (but I dont really know).

The other magnet schools, out of the 4, 2 are for fine arts, which might not be a big feeder for math and engineering programs. One is a general liberal arts program.

Only AR johnson seems to be match/engineering intensive. It only has 463 students over 6 grades.... so an avg of only 77 students per year.

www.schooldigger.com. I find this site to be a very reliable source. Choose Georiga, choose high schools, then you can see the ranking from 1-399.

The High School cluster that Momdog, Buffalo, and I are in... ranks #7, whereas Northview High ranks #8. That's all that matters to me... booooya!!!
