MARTA is #5 as the most heavily traveled rail systems, for all those that say 'nobody rides MARTA'. While only accounting for 3.5% of all HRT passenger miles it still has the 2nd highest occupancy rate among HRT systems. MARTA's got better occupancy rate than WMATA and lower CO2 emissions per passenger mile. MARTA is putting up great numbers compared to the big HRT systems. We're in good company with some major US cities. Good job MARTA!

Atlanta is surrounded by hundreds of miles of suburbia...people are just scared of people using something besides a personal vehicle as their main means to get around because they can't really adjust to the concept of anything else and don't want to. That may be a bit of a generalization, but suburbanites always seem to find some excuse not to ride a bus, and sometimes even not to ride a train.

Yeah, just a bit of a generalization.....

And the "excuse" for many is that the buses and trains don't start and/or end where they need to be. I rode the train and the subway all the time when I lived in NJ and had to go into NYC, because there were 4 train stations within less than 10 minutes of my house in "suburbia", and once I got into Penn Station, I could hop on the subway and be within 3-4 blocks of just about any destination I needed to get to in NYC. I'd love to ride the train to work here, but it doesn't currently start or stop near my destinations, so it's a moot point.
