Yea, she's gettin' there. Its' interesting seeing the other cities that rank right along with Atlanta. I wonder how long will it be and what will it take to boost the city up a notch or two. Do you think its' possible?

Well, we're currently in the same league with Boston, Dallas, Miami, and Philadelphia. One more level up and we'd be sharing space with L.A., San Francisco, Toronto, and D.C.. And judging by the current economic outlook, I'd say it'll be a while before we're bumped up.

P.S. Charlotte's grouped with Baltimore and Cincinnati. Hehe.

The economic outlook, in terms of the unemployment rates and such, has little do with this study. Actually, it has nothing to do with this study.

It's about the international connections the city and it's corporations have with the world. With that said, this is something we do very well.

Unfortunately they also have this list, ranking levels of globalization. Atlanta ranks in the "Beta -" as far as intensive and "not extensive" as far as extensive.

Although some other world class cities also fail to rank on the globalization chart, such as Berlin, Athens, Budapest, Vancouver, etc...

I'm not positive on how they're interpreting their data sets, but more than likely it's a reflection of the level of financial services/products or something in a city, as opposed to the "prominence" of a city, which seems to be more or less what the chart in the OP is getting at.

In any case, as far as the first chart in the OP goes, I'm vexed as to how Florence and Jerusalem seem to rank so low.

I wish that ranking translated to more world class amenities and more investment in public infrastructure. It all just reminds me that by about 6pm or so M-F the majority of Atlanta's business clout goes back home to the suburbs.

I think Atlanta's ranking is mostly due to the airport. Other signifigant factors contributing to an Alpha ranking are the CDC, the Olympics, and the number of foreign consulates (24, sixth in the nation behind DC, NYC, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston).

I personally think the ranking is accurate, but I was surpised to see Atlanta ranked alongside Istanbul, the former capital of the Roman Empire, and above Berlin.
