I am considering a job in Sandy Springs, but I live in Roswell (30076). Currently, I work in Alpharetta, and my commute is about 20 minutes. How long of a commute am I looking at if I worked in Sandy Springs instead? The job has the option of flexible start times--is there a time when it's better to leave for work? And what about in the reverse direction (coming home at night)? Is the traffic still pretty sane at 4 pm, or does everyone have the same idea and hit the road at once?

I'm tempted by MARTA, but that will be 45 minutes each way (and a little more, since I don't live next door to a park and ride). But if driving could potentially take an hour, then MARTA sounds like a better way to go...

Thanks for any input!

It will probably be about the same depending on your start/finish time and the cross streets of where you live. If the new office is on Roswell Road near 285, this area is congested every day.

I live in Cumming, near West Forsyth HS and my office is off the 400 at Abernathy Road. I take Exit 12B to Exit 5. I usually work from 7 AM to 4 PM. My morning commute is typically 25-30 minutes and my afternoon commute is 30-35 minutes. This is going 23 miles each way.

Thanks! This is reassuring. I'll be getting on 400 around exit 9, and my office is near exit 5B.

What time is best to leave in the morning? And is it always awful going home, no matter what time you leave?

I live off of Exit 9 and work in Midtown....if you leave anytime before 7am, you will have a 15-20 minute commute. Even up to 7:15 should not make it more than 30 minutes. It takes me 35 minutes before 7am and 45-50 after but I am going to midtrown. At night, the bad window is 4:30 - 7pm. and adds about 15 minutes to your morning commute. It really is not as bad as some claim it is.

I usually leave the office at 4:00, there are some days I stay late to wrap up projects, etc. Staying later adds 10-15 minutes to my commute times. Going home, you will have 4 full lanes of the 400N till exit 12. Coming down, you will not see 4 full lanes until exit 7 (Holcombe Bridge road). Like dens said, it's not that bad of a drive.

Not much difference in commute time between the two. Push commute to bottom of list. May be better to focus more on career goals, salary difference, comfort level (starting a new job is stressful),whether or not you just need a change, etc.

Can't you just roll down Roswell Rd? It's never crowded in the morning as everyone is fighting to get on 400...

I find Highway 9 to be a miserable drive. Lots of stop lights and just plain bad drivers.

But it's doable, if you prefer to avoid 400.

That's flying.....it would take 25 to 30 minutes just for the 400 piece....ad 15 from west Forsyth to 400.......and Only if you were rolling by 6:30......I come down 400 at that time living 2 miles off 400 and it takes 30 to make that jog to the perimeter....and only if I am doling at that time as well.....Roswell to sandy spgs???

30-45 mins depending where you are going in sandy spas and where you are originating in Roswell.......everyone forgets the time just to get out of a subdivision and on a highway let alone the time on said why and then the egress.....20 miles in 20 mins? Must have that new pass that says you never break, ignore all lights and all cars get out of your way so you can make a steady 60mph start to finish including on ramps, off ramps and parking?

Not.......

I leave the house at 6:20 AM everyday. I leave a 10-15 min cushion for back ups, accidents, etc. Been living here since June, saw only one accident so far that slowed me down.

My company on the corner of Abernathy and Glenlake Parkway (right next to the Exit 5 off the 400).

My co-worker in East Cobb lives 13 miles away and it takes him longer to get to work than me.
