Looks like good news for this part of Downtown. In addition to creating more foot traffic across this portion of Piedmont Avenue, the aging building will supposedly receive at least $25 MM in upgrades.

The biggest issue with Downtown attracting more companies is a lot of the buildings need to renovated to compete with newer offices in Buckhead and Perimeter. This is good news... the Equitable building is also supposed to undergo renovations.

Anyone who didn't have to would not want to walk on that stretch of Piedmont. It's particularly soul-sucking.

The article mentions Harris Street but it has been renamed John Portman Boulevard. I just hate the renaming of streets.

That area is behind the Hilton near the Interstate, a bit out-of-the-way. Georgia should have set aside about 300 acres for a state government campus with the capitol building at its center. What Georgia has is such a mess with the worst eye-sore the Sloppy Floyd State Building.

Why is it in the "old" days governments built beautiful classic buildings and now the buildings are eye-sores. This new location for the Georgia Department of Labor

is almost as blah. And knowing state government agencies, it will just make the area even more rundown.

This is great for downtown. The state of Georgia really deserves immense kudos for continuing to pump life into downtown. In addition to the Capitol and all the state offices and agencies located around there, consider things like --

GDOT taking over the One Georgia Center Building
The Dome
Georgia World Congress Center
Centennial Olympic Park
Georgia State University
MARTA
The Gulch MMPT

... and many, many others. You often hear people say the state doesn't take care of Atlanta but I'd say just the opposite is true.

I was honestly unaware that building was vacant.

This is fantastic. At first, I was afraid that a new building would be built and no existing office space would be filled, but however drab the building is, I'm glad that it's finally serving a purpose. Now to fill the rest of downtown's buildings...
