Tangentially related to Gwinnett Place Mall via Moonbeam ownership, Pittsburgh's Century III Mall [which, BTW, makes Gwinnett Place look like Perimeter Mall, right now] to be sold off at a sheriff's sale.

Sears has sold their part of the mall to a luxury apartment developer...

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Moonbeam has no comment.

The fate of Gwinnett Place is imminent, its far beyond recoverable and is just sitting there practically waiting for its demise. Honestly it held on for a LONG time and its quite amazing the place isn't closed yet but its sad to see it go down this path.

Im kind of wondering what they plan on doing with it though. Unless they build a live / work / shop community like Avalon there, I dont think Luxury apartments will do well there.

Community leaders are happy Sears is going under. They view it as one of the last holdouts that made the mall somewhat viable. Without it, the demise of the mall is much closer and the area will be able to do something with it.

Moonbeam has the mall in a stranglehold because as a private owner, they can't be forced to do anything with it. But they don't own Sears. Now, what we need is for Megamart to go under and sell its building. But the biggest thing we need, by far, is Moonbeam to go away.

Still 100% convinced it's a money laundering front.

What about eminent domain? Or code violations for neglect?

How did they just have a dead body there for weeks?

From the AJC article:

Quote:
Property records suggest each of Gwinnett Place’s remaining three anchors — Macy’s, MegaMart and Beauty Master — also own their buildings.
That means there are 5 total owners. The above 3 plus Northwood Ravin and Moonbeam. I'm sure they're all holding out for a sweet deal, and the last one to agree will probably the one who gets it.

I can't believe that Macy's is still open. That is so crazy, with the state that mall is in. My mom used to take me shopping there, 20+ years ago. Was completely different mall.

I definitely see Gwinnett Place becoming an Asian Town Center. The immediate area has some of the largest concentrations of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Indian populatations in the South. I could see large Asian chain stores locating there.. along with more food courts, apartments, and mega asian grocery stores. When we are in the Atlanta area we usually always make a trip up to the Gwinnett Place area for authentic Chinese and Korean food.
