Straight up 75, right through downtown Atlanta. Unless you're coming through town between 4pm and 6pm, you'll have no problems with traffic.

I agree. I do the through Atlanta drive often and 285 around(maybe once upon a time, but now it is through) Atlanta is no better than cutting trough the center of town. The trick is timing. Try to avoid the whole metro area between 6 and 9am and especially 330 to 7pm. If you time your passage through Atlanta to avoid those times, you will have no real issues. Even if you have to go through at those times, just build in some time for traffic and avoid Friday afternoon at all costs unless you like the smell of car exhaust across 12 lanes for 2 hours. You will still come out ahead over taking a detour around the city because there are no viable alternatives that will avoid all traffic unless you detour through Alabama!

Happy driving!

Taking I-285 is actually a longer drive, mileage-wise, and at that the traffic often is worse. Unless there's some major backup, I generally go straight through. You save time going through town.

I think it's funny how when driving south on I-75 near the "Cobb Cloverleaf", and you see all these out-of-staters merge to take the "bypass", as though they're going to save time. About two out of every three out of state residents decide to take 285, it seems.

I would try to time it about lunchtime. That way there is less traffic and you could stop and grab a bite to eat while you are here.

Unless it's raining, of course.
