Listening to the folks on here in 10 years Atlanta will look like a bullseye from space with 5 big circles going further and further outside the city.

It already does.

IMO, I'm all for a northern arc. First and foremost, however, is the widening of the rest of I-85 from 985 to South Carolina. Should be at least 4 lanes in each direction from 985 to Jefferson or Commerce, then 3 lanes in each direction (one extra added lane from what is currently in place) from Jefferson/Commerce to South Carolina.

Also, more freeway lighting is needed on MANY of the metro's existing highways.

Atlanta is not underserved in expressways. it is overserved in sprawl and a vast waste of large lot sprawl inside the perimeter north of Pace Ferry all to north of Riverside. Massive land wasted.

Agreed. There is NO way we're over served by our freeways. No way we need to add any more lanes to the 16 bajillion we have on the connector, but could we use easier ways to get around in strategically placed areas of certain corridors? Absolutely!

I believe the point the previous poster might have been trying to make about being over served is that all we need to invest in is our mass transit. While we do need a majority of funding to be focused on that, we still need to concentrate on our freeways as well. Not abandon them. That wouldn't make any sense.

Well, we do lack east-west connectivity in the northern suburbs. The "Northern Arc" is apparently very controversial and surprisingly there is not much support for it on the northside where it is most needed... if it ever resurfaces, it should definitely be a toll road with limited interchanges. However, I doubt it will... didn't Sonny Perdue use it against Roy Barnes to get elected?? Seems like there isn't much political will to bring it back.

Also, I would think a toll road with limited interchanges bypassing 75 similar to the one proposed through Paulding County would be worth considering.

To the pro-transit crowd:

We are about to spend $900+ million on 8 miles of rail on the Clifton corridor.
MARTA's Daily ridership projection: 18,400
MARTA's New rider projection: 6,500

$900 million for 6,500 new riders per day. Horrible math.

Does this sound like the most effective way of solving the region's transportation problems?

The Northern Arc was THE political third rail for Roy Barnes and I can't imagine it wouldn't be the same today.

78 isn't officially 1-22 yet. But the only two areas that I know of that need work is in Birmingham (where it hasn't quite made it to I-65 yet) and in Memphis, in which it turns into Lamar Avenue. There hasnt been construction of the interstate in Memphis yet. The distance between it is essentially done

Does adding more lanes and more congestion? Wasnt 285 supposed to alleviate traffic congestion?
