i'm specifically referring to the private company that the state has licensed to run the park.

i'm disappointed in what they've done with stone mountain park. instead of making it a destination for families with its outdoor activities, history, making use of the mountain itself and the lake, they haven't done much except put a really bad amusement park next to the old visitor's center with some cheesy attractions like the "4-D" theater and the godawful place where they serve you "hand-tossed" rolls (don't even ask).

it seems like the only good things in the park are the things sponsored by outside groups— such as the tour of southern ghosts during halloween, the various festivals that go on in the park such as the scottish festivals, and the stone mountain inn.

the new hotel on the other side of the mountain we had some difficulty with, but it was unrelated to the park management. we booked a room there, and they sold our room— they then told us they overbook by 3% because they expect people to cancel, and no one cancelled this time.

what's the deal with this private company that's running the park? it just seems like all the stuff is really stupid and phony and has nothing to do with the park— you could have this sort of stuff anywhere. why not have something related to the park that is something you can go back to again and again?

When Stone Mountain was going private, I wrote a letter to Sonny Purdue complaining about it. Amazingly, he responded. I'm going to look for the letter and when I find it, I'll post it.

If I remember correctly, I was complaining about the method in which the contract was awarded. I wanted an open bidding process where companies with proven track records could come in and really help Stone Mountain Park. Instead, Georgia gave the contract to some company that only had experience running cheeseball attractions in Branson, Missouri. So what the hell do you expect? They may as well have hired the people that run South of the Border to go in there.

You might have to do some Googling to dig up the info. Years ago when they were chosen, a couple of smaller news pieces were done about it online where as per the post above, some people were questioning how they were awarded the job. They also were rumored to have some very conservative political tie-ins on the side as well, but again, it was years ago and details will just have to be dug up.
