Hello All,

I have been living in and paying GA taxes for the past few years. My job is relocating me to Texas for one year where there is no state tax. I have no house in Georgia, but I plan on keeping my Georgia driver's license and Georgia tags for my car. Do I still have to pay Georgia taxes every pay check while living in Dallas?

Thank you tax professionals!

From my sister the tax accountant. Georgia basis their residency status on intent. Since you will not be maintaining a home in GA you want to interpret this to your benefit. In the year you move out you would file a part year resident and the year you move back you would do the same.

You still want to check Texas law because you could be in violation for not getting a license and tag (GA is 30 days). While GA law is grey, the IRS does have a definition of a legal resident that you can look at for support.

No, you will work in texas. You probably want to get a texas license and plate as i believe they are cheaper and as the other one mentioned, the police could be a problem.

You are required by *law* to have a Tx DL and registration within a period of time (90 days, I think). Of course, how this is enforced will really depend on where you live. And yes, registration is much cheaper here in TX, but bring your tax receipt from when you bought your car or they will try to collect sales tax on it.
