The underlying problem with these data centers is that legislation is in the works to push the burden of electricity/energy expansion costs on to the residential consumers while the data centers, factories, offices and largest consumers of energy reap the benefit while working people have trouble keeping their air conditioners on.

Isn't that the policy guidance of our legislation as always? Doling out tax credits at the expense of us?

You have a link to this?

I'm about to move a business into a warehouse and looking at GA Power's site, power for businesses is around $.09/kwh
http://www.georgiapower.com/pricing/.../3.00_GS-5.pdf
while it's $.04-$.05/kwh for residential.

This isn't about rates, it's about taxes and fees residential customers pay and what it gets collected for.

Oh p.s., get ready to pay sales tax on everything you order online.

Not everything, it only affects websites that are based in the state or those of companies that have a physical presence here. A lot of sites already charge sales tax based on this model.

I stand corrected. Been watching a little too much WSB-TV lately.

What about the effect on street life? I've read that data centers need a relatively limited number of workers but it seems like this will still add jobs and people to the mix. Is this place currently empty?

I know that there are people working in the Cancer Society building, but I don't know how much of it is actually occupied. Interesting news. Unfortunately, datacenters don't have large working staff for the amount of space they occupy.

Saw in the AJC that Georgia Power wants to close two coa-fired plants

Regulators weigh coal-unit closures, cost to consumers *| ajc.com

with our electric bills going up. Might make Georgia less appealing for cheap power.
