Basically it is a high crime area that is about 99% black or higher. The area has trouble attracting retail establishments. The South Dekalb Mall in the area has struggled for years on end. Litter and trash are a common theme along the roadsides. Often grass and weeds grow tall along some areas of the road.

Neighborhoods just like Panthersville can be found much closer to the urban core of Atlanta. Part of Panthersville's problem is lack of proximity to much of anything, save the airport and South DeKalb Mall, neither of which are useful to most people more than once or twice a month.

Oh, yeah, it has been Panthersville forever. I always assumed it was named that because there'd been a bunch of panthers there at some piont, but that's total guesswork.

Did a little research, did you scroll down and see the link to the map I found pre-civil war? 1850s, shows Panthersville.

The GBI is down there too.

That used to be where Southwest DeKalb high school was, but I don't know where they are now.

SWD is off Wesley Chapel/Rainbow Dr now.

You have the GBI, GPC at Decatur, Sara Lee and Department of Juvenile Detention center and that's pretty much it...
