Is there a mass exodus of jobs away from the Atlanta area? Not that I've seen.

Will Atlanta continue to expand at the rate it has in the past 25 years? Probably not, but would that really be the worst thing in the World?

There are plenty of jobs out there and even the housing market is showing signs of coming back to life. Traffic in Atlanta really isn't worse than other cities of this size. This was not a make or break vote.

Perception from the outside.

so the regions that passed the tsplost will only have to put up 10% for local projects while those that didn't pass it have to put up 30%? Why the heck was that not made more apparent?

I'd be very surprised. Who would push for Savannah to be the state capital again? All those annoying gnats. Sorry, just me trying to swat a gnat.

It was, people just didn't heed the warning in the numerous articles that discussed it.

Looks like Gov Deal is setting up his re election campaign in 2014.

No revote, no gas tax hike, Deal says *| ajc.com

Quote:
As for the Sierra Club, NAACP and other groups that opposed the transportation tax because it did not include enough investment in rail, Deal delivered a bitter pill: They're still not going to get what they want. He indicated expansion of MARTA and other rail projects will not be high on the priority list.

"MARTA needs to be fixed and before the taxpayers are going to spend any more money on MARTA ... I think [voters] also sent a message that they're not going to put more money into something they perceive is not functioning appropriately with the revenue that's available."

Later Wednesday, Deal said Tuesday's vote "slams the door on further expansion of our rail network anytime soon."
I guess, we have wait and see what happens in January.

But Macon's district defeated it. It was close but it squeaked by in Bibb County.

So we'll see if this is a game changer for the Columbus, Augusta, and Vidalia regions. I doubt it will be a big deal for Vidalia. And Augusta and Columbus aren't exactly at interstate crossroads. Augusta doesn't have an interstate to Savannah for instance. Augusta however will have a new comprehensive research university as an economic engine so the timing might be good for both.

Can someone answer me this: why can't the city of Atlanta propose its own T-SPLOST for Atlanta projects? I'm pretty sure it would pass.
My reaction was the same as yours.

I've been to the Atlanta region many times.
I think this referendum failure is a signal that Atlanta's growth is going to slow way down in the near future.
You can only sprawl out so much before you have to use mass transit to get people to work in a timely manner.
Already the freeways in Atlanta suck and are jammed with traffic. Traveling on I-75 and the beltway is just massive gridlock.
Right now Atlantas metro area has 5.3M people
i expect it to top out at 6M and then either hold stable or have a very very slow decline.
curious to see what this failures effects on future business investment will be too

If nothing is done in the future the law of Diminishing returns is going to apply to Atlanta's growth and prosperity very quickly.

It was in black and white on the final report. Majority of those that voted NO, never read the damn report. They had no idea the consequences and Debbie "Poodle" Dooley and the other anti-TSPLOST crowd never made that info part of their NO campaign. The YES crowd knew all about it. Thank you so much Tea Party, now we are stuck with the status quo.
