Between, zipcar memberships, bikeshare memberships, heavy rail subway, and streetcars, not owning a car in 2012 has become extremly easy for weekends and during the week. When you add up the car payment, car insurance, gas, car maintenance, and car depreciation, you are saving TONS of money by not owning a car. Obviously it's harder to do this in some cities, but in dense cities, it's easer and cheaper to live this way.

I honestly think the advent of car sharing and it's increasing popularity is going to raise the percentage of households not owning a car in D.C. more than the 37 mile streetcar network or the growing capital bikeshare network. Things that people needed a car for have been answer by car sharing. Obviously Metro is the main reason but car share takes care of the problems you listed.
I was in DC from the early to mid 2000's and it was early in that time when I decided to buy another car. I'm not sure if Zipcar, etc even existed then, but if so it was just getting started and was not nearly as common as it is now. You are probably right that if I were in the same position now it might be the best solution. I've never used zipcar, but I heard it is good and pretty easy to use.

It is great to see people bringing products and services to market to help us be more efficient!

This is a very good point that kind of got glossed: Most residents do not have easy access to parking, and quite a few do not own a car at all.

People tend to miss, with all the new shiny development straddling Peachtree, most of Midtown was build in the early 20th century. That means there are no driveways or garages for the majority of the district and on street parking is the norm.

When I lived there I did not own a car and thanked the lord for it everyday when I would come home from work and see the cars lining the block for as far as the eye could see.

Because you have a car does not mean you have to use it during rush hour.

That's like saying I'm glad I have a heart condition and can't ride Space Mountain because I've noticed sometimes the line for it gets really long.

I agree, put it underground or make it look incredible if its above ground.

Midtown can't even get Georgia Power to bury power lines. What chance do they stand of requiring underground parking?

Much as I'd love to say, "hey, let's make this building car-free," we're a LONG ways away from that. Give people choices. However, it looks like it's only a few blocks away from the nearest MARTA station, so people that don't mind walking a little should be able to have that choice.
