The solution to your "free market" conundrum isn't creating slums. It's instead making efforts at federal and state level to improve the chances low income people can improve their situation. Better education, more middle class jobs. Less money concentrated at the 1%. Starting with Reagan's "temporary" trickle-down economics, we have miserably failed at that.

There were other factors such as suburban flight in the 60s/70s, open-ended trade with China, and unconstrained financial markets (insufficient regulation leading up to the recession). There are still serious issues now with the financialization of business and short-term earnings interests trumping good, healthy long-term planning. That is often enjoined on companies to perform layoffs here and there, rattling entire areas. The financialization of the business world has actually caused a lot of inefficiencies as far as actual results of how they help society, and instead the measures of productivity and efficiency are often hollow and don't really help the world. Production for the sake of production, led by people being sold things they don't really want or low-quality junk.

The lack of loyalty of companies to employees and vice-versa, and movement from pensions to 401ks has caused a lot of damage too by bloating the financial markets.

Of course, the flip-side that was a problem that still exists sometimes is labor unions and other too bureaucratic, hierarchical business structures years back (ahem, SBC/AT&T) making some employees who wanted to work hard be under-utilized, and others able to sit there and flip pencils at the ceiling for years and be paid. The movement away from that was largely due to computers, and things didn't have to flip so far to the point that there's virtually no job security for employees and any expectations to keep good employees around for employers.

Looks like a nice win for Peachtree corners.

One longtime global insurance consulting firm HQ'd in Central Perimeter may be packing its bags for Peachtree Corners. And that could leave the door open for one big office tenant to grab signage rights over I-285.

Looks like south Hall is getting in on the mixed-use craze.

Quote:
A proposed $700 million, 508-acre mixed-use development got a green light Aug. 25 from the Hall County Board of Commissioners.

According to the Gainesville Times, the board approved plans by Peachtree City, Ga.-based ARW Group LLC to move forward with what it calls Atlanta River Walk. Read the story here. The project would be centered around a man-made river and include 265 single-family homes, 215 townhomes, 600 multifamily units, 242,000 square feet of retail space and 424,000 square feet of office space.

More like loss for those whom believe in good urbanism, alternative modes of transportation, and not drive-up urbanism that connects to nothing.

Hard to say, since people in this town come from so many directions. And a lot of folks still prefer to drive even when they have MARTA access.

However, I'm sure some people will be affected. On the other hand it may be closer for employees who live in and around Peachtree corners.

I find it amusing at the almost black and white dislike OTP and ITP have for each other. I feel that as a result, each are ignorant of what the other offers.

Apparently Covington is about to get into the movie business in a big way.

Quote:
Rahim Charania, founder and CEO of American Fueling Systems, is eyeing a 700k SF mixed-use movie and post-production studio on a 160-acre plot off John R. Williams Highway, just west of Oxford College, in Covington. The $110M project, according to documents filed with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, will include pre- and post-production filming and editing studios and office space.
