It's a common perception that any area Southeast, South, or Southwest of Downtown is a dangerous, drug-infested zone. That sentiment is usually expressed by those who have never set foot in the area, or if they have it was a bad, ugly experience so they labeled the entire surrounding area bad and ugly. I noticed one post mentioned "the area looked scary when I drove through once" - but we all know that isn't a complete assessment of the area.

The children playing and ice cream trucks and sitting on the porch at 11 p.m. baiscally described my neighborhood and general area. It's not all rainbows and butterflies, but it's safe and I feel very comfortable...and I'm in South Atlanta near Downtown. People really should try to open their minds and shed some of the popular notions of inner city danger, and really look more closely at some areas of Atlanta. It would be an eye-opening experience.

MLK Historic District in Old Fourth Ward is definitely a neighborhood in transition. For decades middle and upper income Atlantans have stayed away from the place, but for several years now a younger crowd is helping to re-energize the once blighted area. Expect this and other intown neighborhoods to come to full bloom in the next few years.

Since negative comments are inherent to blogs (of any sort) when a question is asked expect negativity. Often these individuals cannot understand why anyone wouldn't want to live where they live or like what they like. They would rather have fear control their lives instead of adventure. They would rather take the tour bus than walk the streets.

Is Old Fourth Ward perfect? Of course not... No neighborhood in Atlanta is, but there is an excitement in the air that IMHO is only in intown Atlanta.

I have to echo the sentiments of the Old Fourth Ward area. It's really looking like a legitimate up-and-comer. It's a nice spot for a young couple, but I probably wouldn't recommend it for a family accustomed to suburban living.

On my very first day in Atlanta, I went to the MLK Hist. Dist. While walking down Auburn, I met a guy who lives in the neighborhood. We chatted for about an hour, then a local National Parks Service officer stopped and joined the conversation. Another hour. They tried to sell me on the neighborhood, and on the strength of their friendliness, almost did.
