Hello,

I have a question about the salary of accountant in Atlanta area. I have a BS in Accounting and 5 years of experience as an Accountant (A/P, A/R, Payroll). I am not a CPA yet. What is the average salary can I expect around this area and who would be the biggest employer for accountant?
I appreciate any comments or advice.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you're in industry. I worked as a public accountant (audit) for a local firm and my starting base pay was $40,500 in 2005. I had friends working in all the Big 4's and their pays were all similar, between $45-47k for audit, and $48k for tax w/a MST. On average, going into private industry pays a little better in the Atlanta area according to my accounting professor/advisor. She says the average starting salary in my graduating class from GT was $48k for those concentrating in accounting (GT has no acctg major, just business administration w/a concentration in acctg). She also brags of a 100% placement rate within 3 months of graduation every year since as far back as she remembers.

Besides the Big4, some local firms are Tarpley & Underwood, Frazier & Deeter (the largest local firm), Bennett Trasher, Smith & Howard.

I'm a CPA and used to work for an accounting and finance recruiting firm before returning back to my skillset. I would guess you could be anywhere in the $40-50k's, but it's kind of hard to say without knowing anything about you. Try contacting some head-hunter firms in the area and they will give you a better idea after looking at your resume. If you are in industry, you have a pretty massive pool of companies to choose from, so it really just depends on what part of town you want to live in.

I'm looking for a tax accountant for a firm in Buckhead. This was good timing on here. I think the salary depends on how much experience the person has, but if any of you know of a tax only accountant with at least 3-5 years of experience in a CPA firm please let me know. I'm actually the receptionist but we're so busy since one of the accountants moved out of town that I'm the one looking for qualified resumes online and printing them out. It's driving me nuts! HELP!

Are you allowed to give the name of the firm? I'm just curious since I'll be looking for a job (in audit though, not tax) once I am back in the area.

Smith, Adcock & Company. We just hired 2 audit only employees and are almost desparate for a tax person at this point... but the right person, not just a body. We might be hiring audit by the time you're back in town. You never know what happens with new people.

I haven't heard of them before, but judging from the website it looks like a close-knit local firm w/similar culture as my old firm. I'll keep it in the back of my head, thanks.

Thanks for the thread. I am moving to Atlanta and will be looking for staff accountant type work. I have an accounting degree with a year and a half of staff accountant experience. Are there any temp/head hunters that you would recommend over others?

Thank you for the helpful info. What would be the best way to apply to Big4? I cannot find an entry level job on their website. Also are they hiring all year long?
