A soaring vision for airport *| ajc.com

Some people laughed when the Atlanta airport added “international” to its name 41 years ago. The global traffic consisted of flights to Mexico City and Montego Bay, Jamaica. But, recalled Sam Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, city leaders of the day had a vision: “We will go plant a flag on a hill and we will eventually build it up.”

This week that figurative flag moves to the top of a gleaming $1.4 billion addition to the airport bearing the name of the city’s first black mayor. The Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal opens Wednesday, creating a new front door to the airport for international fliers. It also includes another 12-gate concourse to handle planes that today fly nonstop to more than 65 foreign cities on five continents.

Just to be clear...ATL is not the "world's largest airport" but it is the busiest airport by passenger traffic and in some years aircraft movements.

Repeating a lie doesn't make it true. These are the facts:

Largest airport in the world -- King Fahd International Airport:

Largest airport in the United States -- Denver International Airport:

People from across the world will love this new addition to our airport when it opens this week. Our airport keeps getting bigger and better. Hopefully they have enough parking to handle all the traffic coming into the world's largest airport

This new international terminal brings very exciting prospects in luring international companies to expand here locally. I think this terminal was a very smart long-term investment in keeping Atlanta competitive in an emerging world economy.

Can not wait to use the new terminal this summer. Not sure what it will be like, but keeping my fingers crossed! Anything is better than concourse E.

DNFTT.

Anyway. It's nice to see something that brings us positive attention for a change.

I wonder if the new terminal will come with friendlier customs officials?
