My (soon to be) wife and I are in our early twenties, and we will be moving to Atlanta come late summer/early fall. She currently lives in Buckhead, and I am in Athens. We aren't exactly sure where we should focus. We've looked a little into the Ashford Park neighborhood, as well as some areas in Chamblee (Sexton Woods). Here are our specifics...

1. Budget 275K
2. House/Condo/Townhome? Home
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) Commute to Perimeter Mall area
4. Children(public school vs. private) No children
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two Mix of two, would like to live in a quieter neighborhood, while close to (possibly within walking distance) some cool restaurants and things of that nature.
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? Not necessarily.
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. Younger couples and families.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does she like the area she currently lives in? What can be better than Buckhead for someone of your demographic?! Otherwise, try the Perimeter area itself. There are some nice looking condos close to the mall.

I know you want to buy, and I know you want a home. But I suggest choose an area, rent there, then buy later.

Welcome to Atlanta. I lived in Athens for many many years. How many years do you have there?

She isn't completely in love with the area, and most of the stuff that we've seen is fairly expensive. That is some great advice though! Thanks for that!

I've been here in Athens for the last five years. I just finished up school in December. How about yourself?

Lived on the eastside of Athens for over 10 years until 2008. Now live in Johns Creek.

In the perimeter area, there is a complex with Alon's, Eclipse Di Luna, ... Behind that there is a nice complex, so you will be walking distance to many many things.

There is also a highrise near the Loehmanns. Probably there many other options.

If I was younger, I would probably be very interested in these.

The areas you listed are both cute and have a vibe. In this economy, I believe that you have to have a very long term view about buying a house. Can you see yourself living in the house 10 years from now? If the answer is no, don't buy it.

If you buy a home, and for whatever reason decide it isn't for you, you could be stuck for several years.
Rent first. You are young, now is the time to have options.
