They have alternative paths to become a teacher for those people who didn't major in education. Atlanta public schools has a program and the state of GA has a program as well, the Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program. I am finding that most of the states I have looked at have programs like this because teachers are in high demand. I have tried most the major universities, GA State, GA Tech, and Emory. The HBCU's, the smaller and private colleges like Oglethorpe, Clayton, and Kennesaw State and the technical and 2-year colleges.

I have tapped into my alumni network, as well as doing informational interviews with directors and administrators of the departments (at the universities) I would be interested in working in. I would like to relocate with a job, but it seems impossible since I don't have a strong work history.

I was going to mention GTAPP, but...it's about as rigorous as going back to get a degree in Education. It's for people who hold a degree in another area and it takes 2 years to complete, plus it requires that you have a job offer from a participating school system before you enter the program. I held a degree in another area and went through GSU's teacher education program - it took 2 years as well.

Have you tried any private schools? Woodward Academy, Pace Academy, Landmark Christian, Marist, Atlanta International, Westminster, and Paideia to name a few...

How about an administrative position with a government agency? There are a zillion City of Atlanta, Fulton County, State of Georgia, and Federal agencies in the city.

Hi,

I have tried every agency possible, you name it. I have heard the Gatapp program is extremely rigourous. They seem to pass out teaching certificates so easily in FL. Other states I have considered like MD, and NJ where I am originally from requires so much more of their applicants in order to teach.

I was there in June for a few weeks and the staffing agencies were very discouraging, they said they preferred if I was already an Atlanta resident, and they typically don't work with out of state residents. I am going to continue with my informational interviews, and see if something comes out of it.

Ok, good luck to you. I know it's difficult...I moved to Atlanta without a job a few years ago, but I got one within a month of relocating. You may not be able to do something like that, but it is much easier to find one if you're living here...
