I'm all for about a 50 cent per mile toll on I-75 and I-85, and about the same rate by distance fares on the MARTA lines. That's how the Tokyo does it, and the infrastracture is nice and efficient over there (and all without a single tax yen). If people don't want to pay, they can always take the backroads (Hwy 41, Roswell Rd., Peachtree, etc.).

Wow, you think it cost .50 mile/per car to operate and maintain an interstate. If the average commute is 20 miles. Then that's about $5000/year per worker(car), $10,000 per household. Talk about a tax increase on the poor and middle class.

I really don't think the one and only small toll road in the entire Metro Atlanta, and at only $0.50, was that big of a deal.

I think it could've stayed indefinitely.

I actually support tolls as well in some cases, but I think the issue here was the broken promise, not the $0.50 per ride.

I can understand that.

But in this case still (only $0.50 ), the little toll should stay.

I'm really wary of tolling all our highways. Why? Because there's a good chance our politicians won't replace gas taxes with tolls: They'll ADD tolls on top of our gas taxes. (Same reason why I'm opposed to a national sales tax, BTW.)

Well, the state wanted to remove the tolls because that was part of the original deal.

However, they finally yielded to intense pressure from citizens and businesses to keep them in place long enough to finish the road. It would have a huge injustice to remove the tolls before 400 was finished.

Ga. 400 toll to end before Thanksgiving - Daily Agenda - Atlanta Magazine

Quote:
Although the tax referendum failed miserably, the toll will still end this year, probably just before Thanksgiving — and, more importantly, in time for Black Friday traffic — Evans told the senators.

I actually like the toll since it keeps people off the road... hopefully it doesn't turn into a congestion nightmare. Looking forward to taking that ugly white sticker off my car though

If it turns into a clogged up nightmare, it might drive more people onto MARTA.
