The city's about to blow $200 million on a worthless stadium, surely they can pony up the money for a streetcar themselves thus avoiding the need for a huge EIS altogether.

Hotel/Motel taxes collected within city limits can only be spent on new/upgrading stadiums, per Georgia State Legislature 2010.

That's really stupid. But not unexpected from the state.

What do you expect from a state that gives $0 funding to MARTA, yet tells it how to spend its revenue?

Unless I'm missing the sarcasm here, I highly doubt they limited that tax only to stadiums.

Look it up. This deal has been in the works for years.
That's why the money generated from this tax, can't be used to repave roads or expand transit.

So it couldn't be used for a new convention center? Or new welcome center? Or even a tourist-oriented transit line connecting just tourist-sites? Wow, even more reason to put this state in my rearview mirror as fast as possible.

You don't even live in the city of Atlanta.

I still don't understand why we would run a streetcar out to an area that has been rapidly losing population instead of routing it to places with heavy residential and commercial development. Between 2000-2010, Census tract 23 lost 45% of its population, tract 7 lost 21%, tract 1002 lost 17%, tract 62 lost 34%, etc.

These streetcars are very expensive and they are being funded in large measure by the folks in the areas that aren't getting them. Why not place them where they will serve the most people and businesses?
