Haha! Sorry, but it always tickles me when someone in the 20s says that. Contrary to what they told you in high school/college, your twenties are basically an advanced form of teenage-hood with easy legal access to alcohol. It's a testing ground for the rest of your life rather than a blueprint for how the rest of your life will go.

You best earning years will be in your 30s and 40s, that's also when you will make the most important decisions regarding the last stage of your life. For people in their 20s my advice is simple: See the World, try something new everyday, enjoy yourself, and don't take things too seriously.

Just my 2 cents. I now take back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Funny that you say Texas. I moved to Dallas a little under a year ago and love it. I lived in Atlanta over 10 years and loved it as well. I never thought of leaving until I lost my job. Definitely keep you eye on Texas if thing don't work out for you there.

Atlanta is America's only major city nestled under a continuous canopy of beautiful trees. 10 years of living in NYC made me appreciate how visually nice it is here. That is Atlanta's greatest attribute.

Mild winters, low cost of living and a big city "mentality" are other great things about Atlanta. Lots of Fortune500 companies make Atlanta a very easy and desirable relocation city according to employment recruiters.

Atlanta's airport is fabulous for its easy navigation despite its size. It is an important economic engine for Georgia and maybe Alabama but not for the Carolinas (a huge part of the Southeast).

Emory and Tech are great institutions, but by the same criteria, North Carolina blows Georgia away. NC also has arguably the best/most technical colleges in the country.

The trade-off for Atlanta's many great things are:

1) Among the worst/most primitive state governments
2) Worst/laziest/ indifferent city governments
3) Horrible, neglected arterial roads throughout the metro.
4) Clueless DOT. Is there a worse or less competant DOT in the country? I would like to know.
5) Borderline sweltering summers
6) Too many armed robberies, smash and grabs, and property crimes stemming from a culture of bad parenting and lack of values.
7) Too many panhandlers always asking for a handout in midtown at my intersection near the Fox Theater. Confronted by 3 just today.

architect77 hit a bullseye with this post.
I would only add that the city has some of the country's loveliest neighborhoods. I don't consider this hyperbole.

Dallas is a great city, probably the best place I could go from Atlanta and be as close to what Atlanta was all about.

But if anything, I miss the lay of the land... the trees, the hills, the rivers.. the easy access to mountain and beach. I miss that sometimes so bad it hurts. And I miss the people. Have met some great folks here in Texas, but there is something diluted about the Texas variety of Southern hospitality. Not saying it isn't here, just isn't quite what it was in GA.

I love Atlanta and will be back someday.

Thanks for the advice Xmas. Your post had a NY ring to it, then i remembered you telling me that you are from New York. People down here tend to settle down a little earlier.

I hear Dallas is great but there is just something about Atlanta.

Lived here 23 years now in various neighborhoods (Smyrna, Norcross, Buckhead, Decatur area) when I was single right through to having a family. No intentions of moving. Quite happy with Atlanta. Clearly people are going to have different experiences, but I sometimes think the complaining threads are from people who would be unhappy anywhere. The only thing that ever makes me think about moving would be if I won some massive lottery and could afford to go anywhere. I have to play the lottery first (waste of money)! Even then I don't know if I would leave the area.
