Parking rates in Atlanta rose slightly from a year ago, with a monthly median for unreserved parking of $96, according to Colliers International’s annual parking rate survey for 2012.

There you go again trying to make rational people change their behavior to something that is less rational when both are available in a free market. You odd, pro-transit social engineering stuff makes no sense. Let the free market operate. Trying to force people adopt a lifestyle that does not suit their desires does not make sense. If transit really made sense for more people, they would use it. However, if it doesn't make sense, why try to force them into having to use it.

The only 'purpose' I can see for this comparison would be to encourage the Atlanta folks to raise their rates, since the cost is currently so 'low'. Doesn't really benefit the Atlanta 'parker' since the money paid is in actual dollars, not some 'percentage' of the norm.

Is the CoC going to tout parking rates as a reason to move to Atlanta? What an odd stat to have 'on hand'. I can hear it now..."Atlanta traffic is horrible because the parking rates are so low!!!"

Y'all do what ever you want, but raising parking rates to the true cost of using a car in the urban center would encourage people to think twice about driving to the urban core when it is served well by transit.

I reckon those cities with astronomical parking costs don't have anyone 'mis-using' their driving privileges in their 'urban cores'. And, of course, many of Atlanta's traffic woes result from folks driving THROUGH the 'core', not parking in it. Might as well slap a toll-tax on THEM!

So if parking rates are below the national average why do people still complain about ParkAtlanta? Its not that confusing or hard to get the curb number and pay at the sidewalk meter. If there are those that still find the parking instructions hard, then they can always park at a MARTA station and ride the train to Midtown or Downtown, its $5/person round trip.
