Today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution published two opinion pieces, one by the Chairmen of Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. and the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, and another by a representative of the Reason Foundation. You can read the piece by the Atlanta BeltLine chairmen here. The other piece, by Baruch Feigenbaum (which for some reason is not posted on the AJC’s website), is riddled with invective and falsehoods. To set the record straight, below are corrections to his misleading piece:

Fact-check: Setting the Record Straight about Falsehoods in an AJC Op-Ed // Atlanta BeltLine

Just another crank that is getting an undue amount of attention.

Well, the whole point of an OP/ED page is to allow people with opposing views to share their opinions side by side so reasonable people can make a true judgement. Be grateful that the new AJC is embracing this concept so aggressively.

The Beltline is a fine project.

But if you think Beltline.org is a legitimate body to set the record straight on this project, do you turn to BP for the best unbiased information on Deepwater Horizon?

You're just pitting one biased source against another.

Well, the Eastern Beltline would have better served as a Commuter and Intercity rail link. Now that it's going I'll support it over road development, but this project won't suddenly make the suburbs obsolete, people will still need a high-capacity transit system to get into downtown from the crowded I-85/I-985 Duluth-Suwanee-Gainesville corridor. Routing commuter trains through Howell Junction and down into the Gulch into the north won't make the freight railroads happy, and will only lead to a commuter rail service with a reduced amount of trains. Coming into the MMPT from the north, the I-85 commuter rail would be competing with Atlanta's busiest suburban corridor, I-75, and you'd suddenly have two corridors, with need for many trains, competing against each other for service, when we could have simply routed I-85 trains down the Beltline and had a high level of service for both corridors.

I agree with TJL. Having Beltline.org provide the "fact check" is laughable. Beltline.org has a vested interest in showing the piece as "riddled with invective and falsehoods". A disinterested party would have been better. The Reason Foundation would mislead us but heavens...not Beltline.org.

The Beltline is a terrific project even if there is no transit component. New parks, trails, street grids, housing and businesses, the revitalization of old industrial areas, an increased tax base -- all of these are huge gains.

Totally agree. An unbiased source that is not. Besides, an op-ed is designed to supply two opposing opinions. Now you're posting an additional op-ed? This could go on for years....

The beltline is probably one of the only things going on for the city of Atlanta atm considering it's terrible economy and high unemployment along with a terrible housing market. They should be grateful that this is going on....probably one of the best use of the taxpayers money because it's going back to the people, not in the wallets and pockets of officials.

The beltline will do wonderful things for this city in the future and might help it on it's way to becoming truly world class.
