I imagine it finally dawned on him or his advisors that if you expect to go anywhere in the Democratic Party you have to get off the fence on the marriage equality issue. That has become one of the key differentiators between Democrats and Republicans, at least for now.

Being against or "evolving" on gay marriage is so 2008.

But it's great for the city to have the mayor representing us regularly on a national stage. And it's great for the cause of gay marriage rights to have him add his voice to the national dialogue.
As this nation continues to move forward, in favor of rights for ALL citizens, one of the biggest shifts has been within the Black community. I don't think you would have seen Reed make a comment like this four, or even two, years ago. I think the change is real, profound, and most importantly, permanent.

Gay rights are going to win.

Civilizations fall by either succombing to external forces or collapsing from within. The brilliant Aztec empire was eradicated by Spain; Rome imploded due to various internal factors.

In my opinion, legal recognition of same-sex marriage is a merely a symptom, rather than a cause, of the internal implosion of a Western civilization that will not survive the 21st century. It happens to be a social symptom, just as a $16 trillion national debt is a moral symptom and the trade deficit is an economic symptom.

Things might be slow in the south but they will come around.
The Civil Rights Movement is certainly cheapened by comparisons to the demand for marriage equality.

Thank You! I am still waiting to hear how many homosexuals were lynched, what part of the bus they were restricted to, how much less they were paid, their separate schooling, how much less was their spending per pupil in school, their separate water fountain, what restrictive covenants were used prevent purchasing of properties, when were they slaves, etc.?

And comparing interracial marriage to homosexual "marriage," please!

A white man could marry a white woman; a black man could not marry a white woman.
A white man can not marry a white man; a black man can not marry a white man.

See the difference.

A man most certainly can marry a man if the controlling law allows. Now, a church can refuse to marry them, but a judge will not be able to if the law allows it.

And, yes, homosexuals have been killed because of their sexual orientation. I don't remember his name, but a young man in Texas was killed in a very highly publicized hate crime, a young man in college up north committed suicide as a result of the criminal acts of his roommate because he was gay. While perhaps not as numerous as the atrocities experienced by black Americans in the past, atrocities against homosexuals have certainly occurred and certainly there continue to exist societal inequalities in respect to homosexuals. Just because those inequalities may not rise to the extreme level as the inequalities experienced by blacks (thank God it hasn't), does not lessen the plight of gays.

Gays getting married isn't going to cause western civilization to collapse. Its intolerance that will lead to inner fighting of social issues, while more pressing needs are pushed to the back.

He said it was a symptom.

Wow, epic fail.

What exactly bothers you so much about gays getting married? If you don't like gay marriage, don't marry someone of the same gender.
