Public school in a middle class Black neighborhood. Good performing school.

This is what the website says:

"Envied by those who cannot attend, cherished by those who attend, and loved by its graduates, Benjamin Elijah Mays High School is the flagship institution in the City of Atlanta Public School System. Benjamin E. Mays High School was named in honor of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, a humanitarian and international pioneer. In honor of this great educator, our academic foundation and world class athletic program is as solid as the rock of Gibraltar. We have been named the #1 high school in the Atlanta Public School System by the Georgia Department of Education."

If you lived in that district, would you send your child there?

Did you thinjk their website was going to say:

"We're a fair-performing school in a middle-class black neighborhood"???

. . . I'm not sure that is a real high-water mark

From recent discussions, it seems that some segments of the student population do quite well in APS schools, maybe even better than the top schools in Cobb if the numbers tell an accurate story.

APS has had systemic issues, certainly, but that doesn't mean it can't do a good job of educating some in spite of that track record.

I always like to give a little shout out to our intown kids, who typically outperform their peers in suburban high schools.

Not true that urban schools fail all students: Intown white high school students outperform suburban counterparts. | Get Schooled

I don't know about Mays specifically but it sure is a beautiful campus.

My brother graduated from Mays five years ago. I think the magnet pogram (math and science) is excellent. I am not familiar with the rest of the school. The students and teachers are supportive. My brother graduated from the US Naval Academy this past May. His friends/classmates have graduated from colleges/universities and are pursuing careers in engineering, medicine, etc.
