According to Wikipedia Atlanta had a population of 432, 427 in 2011.

Is the city actively working to increase the population, or does this happen naturally?

Is it possible to get Atlanta (proper) to ~ 650,00 by 2025?

Think Quality not Quantity - what is to gain from the city actively trying to increase the population number.

Cities need to actively work on increase jobs in their area, improving the tax revenues through better land use, better transportation, better education and overall quality of life. If they do this then the population will grow.

Don't forget with increase population comes increase in expenses to support the residents. So you need to make sure that the revenue growth in the area is on pace.

Well, minus 10 points for using Wiki anything.(Although the 'range' around 420K seems to be pretty consistent among many sources)

Atlanta's population was over 400K when I got there in 1980. Doesn't sound like such a huge increase in a dozen years is likely (or desirable, depending...).

So that you understand the full context of everything...by 1990, Atlanta's populution has dropped to below 400K.

You also have to take into account that while some sections of Atlanta have grown rapidly, other parts of the city have emptied out quite a bit.

What is significant about 650,000?

Given the nature of how Atlanta developed and the incredible waste of land in the northern third of the city (Buckhead up to the river) occupied by very expensive homes and land, I don't see it happening and the city's growth while positive (which is great compared to decades of decline) was very modest from 200-2010.

Atlanta's population will increase significantly with all the infill of multi-family developments. Several being built this year along the Eastside BeltLine and in Midtown. Also, the rate of new-home, infill construction in the intown neighborhoods is picking back up.

It's arbitrary. 400k is just kind of embarassing

Since Minneapolis (387,000) + St Paul (285,000) is 672,000, it's obviously a very important threshold to attain.

Seriously, I'm not sure why people are fixated on Atlanta's population. The urban core still has room to grow, and that's a good thing.
