Sounds pretty big. Huge thanks to the feds for looking into this.

Essentially ten police officers are in custody and being accused of providing protection for drug dealers.

Quote:
The arrested officers came from wide swath of law agencies: Atlanta, Stone Mountain, Forest Park and the DeKalb County police and Sheriff’s Office. Officers from MARTA and a contract agent for the Federal Protective Service also were arrested.
This is particularly frightening.
Quote:
At least some officers appeared willing to kill to protect their gang employers — although no violence was reported. Just before a deal with a new buyer Jan. 30, DeKalb police Officer Dorian Williams told confederate Shannon Bass that wounding was not an option. “I gotta (expletive) kill him, I just can’t shoot him,” Williams said in a secretly recorded conversation, according to the federal affidavit. Bass was among the accused accomplices arrested.

Williams recommended using a high school parking lot for the afternoon transactions because the activity and backpacks wouldn’t look suspicious, the affidavit said.
The investigation started sometime in 2011 by the ATF. The FBI got involved and set up a sting operation. They caught numerous officers in multiple instances providing protection for drug transactions.

Quote:
ATF Special Agent in Charge Scott Sweetow would not name the street gang involved, but he suggested the public corruption aspects would be far ranging.
“I can say this is probably not the last you will be hearing of this case,” he said.
Keep it up ATF. Here's hoping this will get rid of / scare a significant amount of the corruption in the metro PDs. Maybe those cops "turning the other way" and allowing the scum to thrive south of Five Points are put in jail. One can dream, right?

This is a step in the right direction, but this only a small fraction of the crooked PIGS (I will not call people who protect drug dealers and gang bangers officers of the law. Ever.) in the department. Chances are these were just the small fish. Let's hope this isn't the end of the purge.

I wonder where the GBI agency factors into this story?

Of course this is not just APD. It involves LE all over metro Atlanta.

Just because it's a common occurence doesn't mean it should be tolerated.

In fact, it's an even better argument to crack down. If crooked cops are to be found everywhere, then all we have to do is crack down a little bit before the drug dealers find another easy target city to do business in.

There's a pretty easy and obvious way to end this problem, and many other problems at the same time. Legalize and regulate drugs just as we do with alcohol.
