Nevermind.
It got a response from the Mayor, which was one of my intents. The lead in was very intentional, and it worked.

How effective are your letters? From your silly accusation about a connection with Oyster cards, I would wonder about that.

Maybe we need to get back to the topic here...

Have you any tips about how to Live Carfree in Atlanta, or in Serenbe (a real challenge, from the sound of it.)

MABLETON - How good for Carfree living?

Is it Walkable? Connected?

Mableton is a census-designated place in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 37,115. When Brookhaven becomes a city in December 2012, Mableton will be the largest unincorporated community in Metro Atlanta.

And what about VICKERY - another DPZ project?

I wouldn't recommend Serenbe. It comes across as Orwellian. I assume that since you are considering Serenbe you want somewhere peaceful and walkable. Check out Virginia Highlands, Inman Park, Candler Park and Lake Claire. If you do want more urbanity Midtown is the place.
The east line neighborhoods, include Edgewood, Kirkwood, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown in that list, are easy to live car free. Midtown, Sweet Auburn, Downtown, and areas of Old 4th Ward a person could live car-free.

Decatur is probably the only suburb where you could pull it off.

Here's what I don't understand:

Exactly what about living car free institutes a feeling of freedom? What kind of car do you intend to drive that would cost $8000 - $10,000 per year?

The bottom line is Atlanta is not a city to live in without a car. Possible? Maybe. But no matter where in the metro you live, I would highly recommend having some kind of car. Even if you have a used beater and only put 1000 miles per year on it, it sure beats living without one. Get a decent used car for a cheap price, put liability only on it, and only drive it when you need it. There. Totally affordable, and now your world is wide open.

You can still look for an area that will minimize your car use if that's the lifestyle you want to live, but why try to put a square peg in a round hole? This is a car city. You might as well ask how to live without air conditioning. Possible? Of course, you can get fans, a swamp cooler, whatever. But you'd be a ton happier just getting AC, even if you just get a window unit for one room.

People who live without cars in Atlanta are people who just can't afford them or fringe people trying to make environmental statements or have some other kind of lifestyle agenda. It is not for the vast majority of people.
