What's wring with metal detectors?

I'm actually surprised that nobody has seriously suggested the idea that you're tossing around, however.

well didn't rural southern whites (and blacks too) pretty much keep weapons in their vehicles even from a young age (13/14?) in 'the old days' (up to 1950s I guess).

For starters, fourth amendment violation. Every other type of checkpoint, courthouse, airport, etc. You can theoretically go through life without going through. But since education is compulsory, students are forced through these checkpoints. Don't like it go to private school? Only works if you can afford it, so the current situation basically means "we'll violate your rights because you aren't rich enough to go elsewhere." And before anyone gets on their high-horse about how I "must have had a bad experience with these checkpoints" my schools didn't have them, I oppose them on principle.

I think they said this school did have metal -detectors, but probably only at the front entrance. Since apparently she was let into the building by another student through one of the side doors.
