Okay, but people support completely getting rid of the welfare system when there are some people who work and still need it. Not everyone has a college degree. If everyone did, then a college degree would become worthless and thus the same problem would arise, except people who went to college would simply be wasting money and time, but that's not how reality works. People are delusional if they believe that.

This is why it's hard for me to see a social conservative's viewpoint on welfare and 'entitlement' services. If we get rid of welfare, we get rid of EVERY entitlement service including unemployment, then we will see how the social conservatives who are out of work fare.

I don't want to get rid of welfare, I just want to get rid of lazy bums who think they should get a check even though they can't be bothered to work or support their families.

You have to factor this in, too.

And for what it's worth I'm not a social conservative. I'm a financial conservative.

You do realize that unemployment insurance income is considered taxable income (both federal and state in GA), right? You've apparently already got your mind made up about anyone who has ever been on a government assistance program, and I don't expect that will change . . . but the situation you have laid out above is flat out wrong as far as taxation is concerned.

Don't be ridiculous. I've never said any such thing and that is not my opinion at all.

It's simply my observation that anytime someone's first mental image of a UI recipient involves a deadbeat dad lofing about, waiting for his check to buy lottery tickets and malt liquor while he watches SportsCenter and texts on his iPhone . . . they generally can't acknowledge such programs benefit anyone, and have certainly never had to rely on these programs themselves.

Georgia State study? I laughed.

It's a fiscal conservative by the way.

That may be your assumption but you missed the boat with me.

To be honest, it strikes me as perplexing when people jump to unjustified conclusions even when we're talking about abuses that almost no reasonable person could disagree with. Why spend energy defending lazy bums who decline to work and support themselves and their families?

I don't see how we can ever have a realistic discussion when folks are operating in the "shields up to any and all criticism" mode.

Who said we were defending the lazy bums? They make up a small percentage of the people who are actually on welfare. Get rid of welfare, then get rid of unemployment too.

I'm sure they have fiscal conservatives in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. What's laughable about being fiscally conservative? To me that's just common sense, especially when you're talking about taking money from one group of folks and giving it to another.
