I will be moving to Atlanta from Dallas this Fall. I would appreciate any tips or help anyone could provide specifically on nearby places to stay. I have heard that the surrounding area for Morehouse School of Medicine is not safe. I am a female moving here alone and I am also very small so safety is my number one priority in finding a place to stay. However, I do understand that you get what you pay for and my budget is small. I'm looking for monthly rent not to exceed $600. I would also prefer somewhere in a vicinity practical enough for me to get to morning classes in a timely manner, whether it be by bus/train or driving (I've also heard that traffic is fairly bad). I don't mind noise and I don't mind older buildings. I'm not looking for any place to be fancy or comfortable. Safety, location, and rent are my preferences.

I've done quite a bit of searching online and it seems almost impossible to find something within those parameters. I will be visiting in May to see for myself. But would anyone here have any suggestions?

If you can only afford $600 per month for rent, you should probably look on Craigslist for a room to rent from a homeowner. As a single woman (with no kids) who has previously lived in Atlanta, most nice/safe/clean/quiet/roach-free/riff-raff-free/drama-free apartments in and around Atlanta (Rex, Stockbridge, Marietta, Smyrna, Decatur, Vinings, etc.) start at about $699 per month.

You don't have to rent a room forever. Rent it until you can find a nice/quiet/clean/drama-free/responsible roommate for a 2-bedroom apartment (good luck with that ) or until you can afford to cough up almost $700 per month for an apartment of your own.

Personally, I prefer to pay through the nose for absolute peace and quiet (no roommates); you can't put a price tag on peace of mind . Also, I highly recommend visiting Apartment Ratings :: The leading source of apartment reviews by renters for renters. before moving into any apartments.

Don't believe all of the reviews, though. You have to take most of them with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't previously thought about the Craigslist renting a room option but it's something I will most definitely look into!!!
