any ideas on what the average commute would be from northern mabelton to marietta (just north of 285, exit 261 on 75)?

Probably less than 15 minutes except on a really bad day. If you're going from Northern Mableton you'd be best off cutting through Smyrna (Hicks to Windy Hill). If you like a more "scenic" but stop and go ride, you can cut through the center of Smyrna (take Hurt to Concord, then take that to Atlanta Rd to Windy Hill). I'll probably get smacked by someone for adding another car to Hurt Rd :-)

Exactly, taking the highway will be a longer drive. The only other option that would be fast besides Hurt to Concord or Hicks to Windy Hill is hopping down to Fontaine and taking East/West to Cumberland then taking Aker's Mill across to Interstate North. I tend to think that'll be longer than cutting through Smyrna, though.

Wow, I'm not sure I expected those times based on what I've heard about the commute around Atlanta in general.
Can you comment on the northern Mableton area? Is it a good place to buy a house? I've heard that the schools are not great but at the moment I don't have any kids. How does Mableton compare to Smyrna or Vinings? How about potential resale value?
Any additional comments would be well appreciated.

In the Atlanta metro, larger roads are bad, and folks tend to get funnelled towards those primary arteries because of a lack of existing parallel routes, but smaller roads can be relatively clear if you're travelling during off hours or commuting in a direction that isn't commonly taken.
I don't think north-south commutes are that common in the southern half of Cobb County?

I live just of Cooper Lake Road between the E/W Connector and Veteran's Memorial Highway, smack in the middle of what I consider the most "livable" part of Mableton, and I like to think of it as Southern Smyrna without the property taxes.
That's because Mableton is unincorporated (as is Vinings, BTW).

In other words, "a good and peaceful place to live".

We don't have kids, but lots of our neighbors do, and they're even organizing a Halloween parade this year for the little kids.

The commute around Atlanta is often better than the commute in Atlanta as long as you stay away from 285.

The schools in Mabelton are fine. My kids have all gone there. Even Pebblebrook HS is better than it used to be and off the NCLB probation list. And South Cobb is a decent school as well.
