My wife and her family are Jamaican and they would tell you that the best food in Atlanta they have found is at this place we go to in Austell on Austell Rd across from the Big Lots store. Funny thing is that I have been there a dozen times and I don't remember the name of the place. But the food is great and reasonable. It is not a fancy place however.

That's the place I'm referring to! The owners moved here from Lauderhill (South Florida). The right side of the restaurant is a makeshift store...the left side has tables and what have you.

Nextdoor is a tire repair shop.

I love the place...it's the only place I can find Buckley's cough syrup here in on the west side of Metro Atlanta....and GOOD chicken patties and coco bread.

Buckley's cough syrup.....I don't think I have been sick with a cold since Buckley's....

I like Cool Runnings, but you really have to just try various restaurant's. There is also a good one in Riverdale that is really good (behind the IHOP off of Riverdale Rd.) -Cannot remember the name.

Tassa is a great Trinidadian restaurant on Powers Ferry Road. They have a good buffett too.

I've also heard that Jenean's on Piedmont is ok.

Oh and ofcourse there is Golden Krust. The one on Barrett Parkway is pretty decent.... good Festival when they make it.

As for west indian/carribean restaurants, I don't think I've been to one in the two years I've been living in Atlanta. Good luck in your pursuit.
Unless Atlanta has changed in the 4 years since I lived there (lived there for over a decade) there are many excellent Indian resteraunts, it being one of my favorite ethnic varieties of food. North of Doraville is an Indian community for heaven's sake. You need to get outside the beltway or Buckhead a few times. Trust me, I've had Indian food in NYC, Indian food in London, and Indian food in India. Atlanta ain't bad at all.

Too funny you should mention Buckley's cough syrup. My husband is from the Bahamas and he's always complaining about America's weak cough syrup. We are moving there in a couple of weeks, he'll be glad to know about that. I myself can't wait to sink my teeth into some patties!

Buckley's is having a taste taster/photo uploading contest on (Direct Link to the Buckleys contest page) MySpace.com to show how awful Buckley's tastes the winner can win a Alaskan cruise and other prizes, it's quite funny!
