Hi there--I saw a few posts about students moving to the Atlanta area, but I didn't find any that asked the family question. I'll be moving to Atlanta during the summer for a PhD program with my two small children and I'd appreciate any advice on good neighborhoods. I'm looking for either apts/houses in safe areas, preferably at or under $1000/month. And also, if anyone can recommend day cares to check out? Thank you so much in advance!

Okay, thanks!

1. Budget: $1000/month (hopefully)
2. House/Condo/Townhome?: Open
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home): Commute to midtown area
4. Children(public school vs. private): Day care-age
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two: Open
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?: I'll have a car but not sure how traffic/commuting is in Atl.
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.: A family atmosphere would be nice.

Family housing is prohibitively expensive on campus. 1 bedroom runs about $1300/mo. Ashley will likely have to move pretty far out to find something for $1k/mo for a 2BR in a decent neighborhood. I went to grad school at GT and lived, at various times, in Norcross, Buckhead, and the Perimeter area. However, rents have increased quite a bit (20%) from when I moved here in '08.

I didn't realize it was that expensive.

When I was in grad school at Tech, I lived at one point on N. Druid Hills but that was a 100 years ago and I can't even remember what rent was. I lived in Brookhaven as well, but I agree budget will be challenging.

Is GLC that expensive nowadays? Wow. I was on campus during the olympics and the really nice housing wasn't that expensive. Sad to hear that it's gotten really high. That's too bad.

I have a friend who lived in brand new apartments off of Howell Mill. I will ask her the name of her apartments. I do not think they were more than 1000 per month.

You might be able to find something in the Defoors Ferry/Collier Rd. area--Defoors Mill, Defoors Ferry West, etc. There are a lot of condos and apartment communities along there, some in your price range.
