We've found a house we love in the Powder Springs area. Not being from the area, it felt like it took a long time to get there and it seems somewhat far removed from the city. Are my impressions correct, or is it just because I'm not entirely familiar with commutes/directions in the Atlanta area? Will residing in Powder Springs prove painfully inconvenient if we spend a good deal of time in Marietta and want to frequent things to do in midtown every once in a while?

Yes. (JMO--others may disagree)

Is that Powder Springs in Cobb County or Powder Springs inPaulding County? I live on the Cobb side and two minutes from Marrietta. It's a hop skip and a jump to Atlanta. The location is great in my opinion.

Powder Springs is a good location. A typical "middle-distance" suburb of Atlanta.
And it is very close to Marietta.

Which part Powder Springs are you talking about? Is the house in the Hillgrove High District, the McEachern High District, the Harrison High District, or in Paulding County?

As others have said, it depends on where your jobs are.

I live in Powder Springs (proper). When I first moved here, I still worked in Chamblee. Would not have recommended that commute then, and since 1 million more people live in the metro area since then, would not recommend such a commute now. So if you work on "the other side" of Atlanta, no, Powder Springs would not be convenient. For occasional intown touristy stuff it's doable.

I have no problem with the commutes to Marietta. Unless you're looking for "under 15 minute" commutes. If you have kids, I would see if it's in the Hillgrove school district (recommended).

Depends what you consider close I think. I ran mapqwest for a house out there in the Hillgrove district and it was 15 miles to Cumberland and 25 miles to Midtown I believe - for many in metro Atlanta that is not bad, for others that is a long haul, especially with the congestion you see in the suburbs many times.

It looks like it's zoned for Harrison for high school and Vaughan for elementary.

Yes--you are in that part of the Powder Springs Address Area that hooks into the southwest corner of the Harrison High District.

That is a good location with top-notch schools. Just north of the Hwy 120--which has many shopping/other conveniences and is a straight shot to Marietta and the Marietta Square/Historic Marietta neighborhoods.

Also, you can easily get to Intown Atlanta by taking the Barrett Parkway south to the East-West Connector which continues on as Cumberland Blvd. There is also Macland Road to the new Windy Hill Connector that can get you to Intown Atlanta too.

Finally, Barrett Parkway going north takes you to the über-shopping district around Town Center Mall.

No matter how much you sugar coat it this area is not convenient simply because of how far it is from any freeways. You will be using long back roads to get to everywhere.
