Vélib' - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Paris Program has lost alot of it bikes, Much more then expected. The programs that seem to work are the you have to signup, and they have your credit card. But there have been problems with that also, they seem to hold you responsible for the bike, after its check'ed in till next person take it out (or they have checked it). So anything that happens to the bike while it locked in bike/rack you still have to pay for damage.

Are you talking about the Paris program? That was not my experience in Minneapolis. The bike is your responsibility from the time you check it out to the time you return it to a dock. According to the article in the OP, it sounds like some cities lo-jack the bikes to discourage theft.

I got a deeply discounted subscription through my work and really enjoyed it -- far more than I thought I would. I think it's a great idea for Atlanta.

Let's see how Citi bike in NYC goes.http://citibikenyc.com/
Couldn't the bike share program adopt the same techniques as Zip Car?

The other problem with these programs is you can't count on a bike being available at a given location at a given time. So you get off at, say, the Lindbergh Marta station planning to bike to Peachtree Battle. . . uh, but no bikes.

See my post above for how Citi Bikes displays the number of bikes and spots available.

These programs have been hugely successful across the country, whether it's Charlotte, DC, Boston, Kansas City, or Boulder. There's no reason to think Atlanta would fail.

Also, we already have a successful pilot bike sharing program right here in Atlanta - ViaCycle.
