*And--there is so much potential with this. Imagine--this as an expansive, yet authentically gritty historical museum on Atlanta's origins. The crucial piece would be how to keep it "rustic and real," but still making it tour/museum friendly--and an actual "place" to go.

Has anyone done this? I saw this recently and I would absolutely love to go. But of course I will be out of town then.

Very cool that Atlanta has something like this.

OMG! This has SOOO much potential! I live in Savannah, where the list of original tours is endless -- and ridiculous! Ghost tours, movie tours, pub tours, true crime tours, architecture tours, pirate tours, yellow fever tours! The latest: Tybee Island Ghost Tours! really? REALLY?!?!

Why aren't their more entrepreneurs in ATL doing this stuff?

I know, right? My friend and I once thought about starting a tour company.

Some ideas right off the bat:

Gone With The Wind Tour
Civil War Tour
Civil Rights Tour
Battle Tour
Various tours not already covered by the Atlanta Preservation Center
Music Tour
Ghost Tour
Forest/Tree Tour
etc, etc.

Believe it or not, there are billboards all up and down I-75 advertising "Gone With the Wind" tours in Clayton County / Jonesboro. What are they gonna see? A low-class blue collar suburb turned ghetto?!

Um, Historic Jonesboro is nice and quaint...and Gone With The Wind-esque.

And--I think incorporating a Gone With The Wind Tour that showcases the countryside and landscape of Clayton and Fayette, etc. (which were beautifully illustrated by M. Mitchell in the book) would be fantastic.

Perhaps, you didn't know, but Jonesboro itself has a fair number of houses built in the mid to late 1800s, so they are worthy of being shown in a tour along with the Tara Museum. The tour guides probably could have the bus visit the quaint old Downtown square of McDonough, especially for people who are not that familiar with Georgia itself.

Back to the topic about Underground tours, it is awesome to hear about this, aries!

i've always thought that the parts of underground atlanta that aren't part of the official underground atlanta mall needed to be restored and reopened... it could be like the underground city in toronto— a real way to get around under the streets during rain or wintry conditions, rather than only a destination unto itself.

I have done this tour and it is excellent. (It went right through the dungeon-like area where I used to park). There are some interesting perspectives on the GSU campus, some evidence of Civil War entrenchments, and a couple of spots where you can get a close up look at some of our aging infrastructure.

I love that kind of stuff.

By the way, if you are interested in trees, contact Eli Dickerson and you may be able to join one of his champion tree hunts or other outings.

They also do a Beltline related tree tour.

Most informative!
