Hi everyone. My company recently announced that we will be relocating from Connecticut to Alpharetta, GA. I'm completely unfamiliar with the Atlanta area, so I don't even know where to begin looking for where to live. I'll be taking a trip down in July to start scouting, but I would like to narrow down where to look.

1. Budget - I'd like to keep it under $1000/mo rent or $150k-$200k purchase. We're leaning towards just buying.
2. House/Condo/Townhome? House or townhome. Anything but a high rise.
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) - Under 30 minute commute to ... It's near North Point Mall in Alpharetta.
4. Children(public school vs. private) - Near a Montessori preschool would be lovely. Not necessary.
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two - A walkable neighborhood is very important. Good restaurants.
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? - Not important
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. - Late 20s, early 30s young professionals/families. Diverse. Husband and I are a mixed race couple hoping to start a family soon. Nearby Asian grocery stores a huge bonus.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

A really good place for you to start your search may be in Johns Creek (in the GA Hwy 141/Medlock Bridge Road Corridor) where there just happens to be both a Super H Mart Asian grocery store and a Montessori school.

Super H Mart grocery store Johns Creek location:
Hmart.com: Online Shopping for Asian Grocery, Korean Kimchi, Rice Cookers, Appliances & more at everyday low prices.

Montessori school in Johns Creek:
Montessori School in Johns Creek, GA | 5815 Medlock Bridge Pkwy | Montessori Unlimited

This particular part of the metro region in the Johns Creek area of North Fulton County also has some excellent K-12 public schools in the Northview HS and Johns Creek HS clusters of the Fulton County Schools district.

The Johns Creek area is also relatively close to the North Point Mall area of Alpharetta via routes like GA Hwy 120 (Abbotts Bridge Road) and State Bridge Road.

Be forewarned that there is a lot of real estate activity going on this area so don't be surprised if it is not necessarily all that easy to find something as low as $1,000/month or $150k-$200k upon first glance.

Good luck and I hope that you find what you are looking for.

Thank you! I'll put it on my list. Even if we don't end up there, it's good to know where a close H Mart is. We love shopping at the one by us.

After living in Los Angeles and the greater NYC area, nothing in real estate pricing will shock me. I'm also not afraid of buying something that needs a little work.

How is the North Point Mall area itself? Trulia tells me that there are townhouses for $125k that are 8 minutes from my future office, but that's all I know.

There are 5 H Marts in the metro area:

North metro area:

Duluth (Gwinnett County), Doraville (DeKalb County), Suwanee (Gwinnett County), and Johns Creek (Fulton County)

South side:

Riverdale (Clayton County)

Also check out DeKalb's Farmers Market (Your Dekalb Farmers Market - A World Market - Atlanta's Best Source Of Affordable Organic Food). You will definitely fall in love with this place. In addition, there is the Buford Highway Farmers Market (Farmers Market in Atlanta, Georgia | Buford Highway Farmers Market). Last but not least, there is a Mega Mart in the Duluth area (Welcome to MEGAMART) which is one of the top diverse cities in metro Atlanta.

There are many Asian shops in Duluth, Suwanee and Doraville (Buford Highway).

You might want to rent before buying. Renting will give you an idea of what location you prefer to live before making a long term commitment. Also, you might not like the area altogether and decide to relocate back north.

The North Point Mall area is very commercial with a multitude of shopping with many stores, restaurants and movie theaters in a very short distance. Hard to think of a national chain that isn't there (with the exception of ultra-luxury stores such as Nieman Marcus, Hermes, Tiffany).

Then there are the business parks, which are actually very parklike.

A short drive away are lots and lots of subdivisions- safe with some very good schools. We stayed at the AMBI apartments near the mall when we first moved here and they recently built more at the other end of the commercial area. We moved here several years ago when my husband's company in Stamford, CT relocated everyone to Atlanta. We have been very happy.

I have bookmarked DeKalb's farmer's market. I fell in love with it just from the description. Reminds me of Cleveland's West Side Market. Will definitely check it out on our scouting trip.
