1. Budget - $1000 including all utilities and parking
2. House/Condo/Townhome? - Apartment (please provide suggestions - apartments.com isn't much help)
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) - job w/ travel, both in and out of GA
4. Children(public school vs. private) - N/A
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two - Urban
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? No
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. Yuppie

I'm a 25 yr old guy that's single and moving to Atlanta soon (really soon). Where should I live? I've never been there before. I am looking for something similar to either Uptown Minneapolis or Uptown Dallas - Low crime too.

Basically, I'm just looking for the young professional part of the city that's not going to break the bank (especially because I'll rarely even be there).

Thanks in advance!

If you are willing to live in an old building with no amenities you may be able to find a place in your budget. An apartment in a good, "yuppie" neighborhood is going to be over $1,000 not including utilities for a nice apartment. You just aren't going to get cheap in the kind of neighborhood you want to live in.

Midtown, Virginia-Highland and Buckhead may be your best options.

Atlanta has the highest crime rate of all major cities (almost 90 crimes per 1,000 residents). Atlanta's crime rate is higher than Dallas, Houston, NYC, Chicago, DC and Los Angeles. It is consistently ranked on the FBI's top ten most dangerous cities list every single year. That being said, this isn't to scare you, you just have to be careful like anywhere else. The areas I mentioned are relatively safe. Buckhead used have bad crime but it has improved, though things still happen. I live in Buckhead and I used to live in Virginia-Highland and I never had any problems personally, though some crimes have happened in these areas (a few murders, and robberies and kidnappings). Despite this, I feel pretty safe and the neighborhood is quiet. People still move here and love it and there are lots of bars and restaurants in the area where people of your demographic hang out.

VIRGINIA HIghlands or Midtown

Safe with plenty of bars and restaurants. Atlanta is safer than most cities. Even Chicago had 48 shootings on Father's day weekend. You will never see that type of crime here

Whatever Tony. Still doesn't change that Atlanta has more crime than all other major cities. So something must be happening here if it's always listed as a most dangerous city while Chicago never is. I forget. Atlanta really is a safe place and the crime statistics are just part of conspiracy to make the city look bad.

We are about average across the country for violent crime but we are quite high for property crimes so calling it the most dangerous city isn't really factual.

To the OP, where is your job? The Atlanta metro area is quite spread out and it could make a major difference in recommendations.

Almost 3 million people life in Chicago alone. I don't think Atlanta has hit 500k in the city.

Downtown, initially but that could change based on the client after a few months.

...which is kind of the rub. Isolate half a million people in the center of Chicago and recalculate the crime rate--it will no doubt be higher than the entire Chicago proper.

Which is a lot of the reason the FBI says themselves these statistics should NOT be used for comparisons. They aren't apples to apples. It's far better to simply look at the neighborhoods themselves and the distribution of crimes within them, than it is to make comparisons between entire cities and metro areas. There's a lot more variation within cities than between them.

The areas I posted you would love plus your commute will be easy since you will be living near downtown
