I agree that no school is perfect. So you can say that I am seeking a better school

She just doesn't want her kids bullied, shot, dealing woth loud bad ass kids or in a non competitive einvironent where the kids don't care about school.

Wanting a school like that is dependent on the ones with good rankings .

Plus the landscape of education is changing.

https://www.khanacademy.org/about

So much instruction is going online.

Also early prep for the SAT/ACT would be a good idea. It's much maligned because of the demographic outcomes and some colleges even dismiss it but I think it's still a big factor. Colleges also like to see activities outside the classroom. So with good grades, good SAT, and activities, she can get into most schools. Hopefully she is a reader, build her vocabulary, and with that Khan academy filling in any gaps and with some discipline she should be good to go.

True, if you are in an environment with like-minded studious students, she should perform better. Maybe that is one benefit of going to a school like Georgia Tech. A place that attracts the top 10% of each high school class.

Unfortunately, the first two issues you list can and do happen at all kinds of schools. Bullying is rampant at many top private schools and public schools. And school shootings are actually more common at schools with less poverty than more.

The IB program at Marietta High School would be about as competitive a program as one can find in a public high school. However, I didn't realize how large Marietta High is until today (I always thought it was a smaller school and that might give me pause.

I would still guess that if your child is in the IB program that is a pretty terrific program with outstanding students.

Well, with these statements, I really don't know how I could help you further.

Here is the problem I often see....

Too many people are looking at these stupid school ranking websites and thinking about being in #1, #2, and #3 are extremely important and college actually care about that....

It isn't true in a way that matters.

The difference between many of these schools in the top 25 often vary more on the percentage of apartments they have, not how well someone that lives in a good family, in a good neighborhood, that invests in the community does...

The difference between rank 1 and rank 15 is 0% apartments and 5~10% apartments within the community (which will bring in weaker students and shifts the mean and median scores slightly)

The most important thing is your child is a top scoring student in top classes (and should actually be in top classes). That is what colleges will look for. Whether a school is ranked 2 or 20 will not effect that.

I know the honors/gifted communities in many schools socially are almost like a school within a school.

One thing I know for sure... You can find a school in that price point to the northwest of town and save yourself a lot of hassle and be just as good as any other school to the northeast of town.

Traversing east-west on the northside is the worst.

I believe that is true, CW. Having served for a few years on an admissions committee I know that was the case at our institution.

It's more important to go to school at a place that equips you to function in life, to think critically and to act independently and responsibly. A few percentage points on an SAT don't tell you whether someone has those abilities.

By the way, I will add my voice to the chorus of praise for your thoughtful and well written posts.

@ CW I don't want to base my decision on commute itself as no job is permanent . It can change in future. If I don't see the school rankings how should I find a good school ? I would be grateful if you can answer that. Thanks

From what I know anecdotally Lambert is great. Our son starts high school there this year. The facility is terrific and curriculum offers so many choices.
