The school cost about $147 million. That is small change compared with the Robert F. Kennedy high school complex in Los Angeles, built in 2010 for $578 million — a figure critics liked to point out was more expensive than Beijing’s Olympic stadium.

But in the Deep South, where the median cost of a new high school is $38.5 million, it might as well be the Taj Mahal.

As a result, some in this antigovernment, tax-sensitive part of the country are grumbling, especially since the project was $50 million over its original budget.

“The raw numbers themselves in terms of the cost of construction should give pause to any taxpayer,” said Edward Lindsey, a lawyer and a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives.
...

The cost seems fine to some parents, who say that Buckhead residents live in one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the South and many pay plenty in taxes.

This is a nice gift to the Buckhead area from the state of Georgia for all the money we send them,” said Jennifer Salberg-Kopelman, whose daughter will be entering the 11th grade.
Watch out! Someone found out how to underline, bold, italicize and change font color. This must be important.

Are the other COA schools crumbling? I've been down to some of the worst performing high schools in the city and the ones I've been to have all been great facilities that lack nothing (except motivated and/or capable students).

Lets not pretend this isn't really about "Ooooooh those evil rich people in Buckhead!"

Er--I wasn't trying to "get you/y'all" with that post--as you would've liked.

Just interesting that information/commentary in the article directly connected with many of the posts on this thread.

Don't be so antagonistic/argument-seeking, bored-boy. Relax.

(And you even wasted time to clip on an image. Wow.)

Over half a billion to make one man rich = good investment

$147 million for a building that will be used to educate tens of thousands of students = OUTRAGEOUS WASTE!

And people in the South wonder why the rest of the nation thinks we're a bunch of uneducated football obsessed tea partiers.

The wave is coming.
It would be nice to see large numbers of Buckhead parents sending their kids to the local public high school. That would mark a real turnaround for the city.

I think basically Buckhead ppl pulled strings and got damn near private school for the kids in the area. Money talks. Same thing with Brandon and Warren. Damn near private schools. Separate campuses for K and 1st. Money talks. Everybody else is 35 kids to one teacher.

I am assuming that the 34 to 1 student to teacher ratio at the APS middle school is due to budget issues (it may not be), and is true. If it is true, then how can anyone defend the cost of this school? It's not "whining" about too much or too little being spent on kids, it's about having serious questions about priorities of the adults who are determining how the money is being spent on kids.---50,000,000 dollars (is that about the amount of the cost overruns?) could pay a lot of teachers' salaries.
