Own a gun but lock it in a safe secure place at all times! Gun ownership is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family. I'm talking from experience!

My ex was from Switzerland where, as soon as you turn 18 you have to join the reserves. consequently, almost every household has a gun, and everybody knows it. Therefore, there are not a lot of home invasions there.

The criminals have guns... why shouldn't the rest of us?!

According to the FBI, Georgia has a higher murder rate than New Jersey. Just wanted to point that out. I can post the rankings of all 50 states by murder rate if you'd like.

Yes, please post. Are we talking rate or actual numbers? Because we have a large population, the rate may actually be lower, even though the actual number is higher.

Okay. I hope this doesn't get cut for being off-topic. Here is the list. It is by rate, not overall numbers, which means that population is taken into account. Very Interesting. So, if GA is #13 and NY is #26 why is it that everyone down here thinks that NY is so dangerous? I feel much safer walking around in Manhattan at night than I do in Atlanta.

b/c other people are walking around with you. In Atlanta, it closed down after 6 for the most part outside the bar areas.

I'm really not surprised that the New England states are below average. New England states don't have the same demographics as the 10 top states.

But I am surprised that Maryland is #2, as it is one of the wealthiest states. Also I am surprised that Michigan is in the top 10, but I guess Detroit skews the numbers there.

You kind of said what others are afriad to say and that is the fact that, if you removed minorities from these stats, our murder rate would be much like that of European countries. Most murders are committed by young black and Hispanic males. They account for about 4% of the population but over 50% of the violent crime. That is why the states that have few of them have low murder rates and the states (except Nevada) that have more of them have high murder rates. Much of Canada's murder rate is because of Carribean immigrants in Toronto.
