We live in Milton, but fairly close to the Cherokee County line. There is a massive landfill off of Arnold Mill Rd in Cherokee, that our understanding has been is only used for construction debris. In, fact, the sign at the entry gate says as much.

Over the past few weeks, our neighborhood has just reeked during the evening and early morning hours, and it appears that the smell is coming from this landfill. I've been Googling for info on who regulates the landfills here, but it seems several different agencies are involved. Can anybody guide me on who to contact?

Several neighbors had their septic systems pumped, thinking that was the source, but it isn't. The stench depends on which way the wind is blowing.

Hi Mattie. I am not familiar with the landfill you are talking about but have worked across the southeast on multiple landfills and contaminated sites as an environmental engineer. You are most likely going to want to call the landfill directly and lodge a formal odor complaint. The site has to keep track of all of its complaints and once it reaches a certain number has to respond to the Georgia EPD to take action to resolve the issue. Also, don't just make one complaint, make a complaint each and every time you smell it. If they give you trouble then feel free to call the Georgia EPD. You will most likely want to speak to the air department but if you just call the front office and tell them you want to lodge a landfill odor complaint and they should direct you. It's a pretty common thing.
