ATLANTA — The Atlanta Beltline project has received an $18 million grant from the federal government.
The office of Rep. John Lewis says the congressman has been notified of the grant, which will provide for construction of two miles of the Atlanta Beltline.
The Beltline is a $2.8 billion plan to transform a 22-mile railroad corridor that encircles Atlanta into a network of trails, parks, affordable homes and ultimately streetcar lines.

It's for the SW trail - here's a piece on the TIGER grant application:

I know it has been a bone of contention on this board at times, but I will have to admit that the Beltline funding structure does give folks outside the city of Atlanta an important voice in the project.

From the CL article:

Quote:
[The the new federal] $18 million TIGER grant to help build a 2.4-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail along the segment between Lena Street and Allene Avenue.

The remainder of the project's $47 million cost would come from the Beltline's tax allocation district, local matching funds from the Georgia Department of Transportation, and already committed federal funds.

I'm not sure what you're saying. What folks? What do you mean by "voice"?

How is the Beltline different from any other major infrastructure project that gets DOT or federal funding?

I mean Georgia and metro area taxpayers in general.

If this were being funded by city of Atlanta residents only that would be one thing, but since we're taking outside money we've got to acknowledge that others have a stake in it as well.

And you're correct -- it's no different from any other GDOT or federally funded project. I've got just as much right to critique a Cobb project as they do the Beltline.

P.S. I do limit all of the above to taxpayers. If you ain't paying for something you have no business criticizing it.
